Foundations of Yoga: Beyond the Shapes

Discover yoga as a complete system for living

Most yoga classes focus on physical shapes. This program goes deeper: we use movement, breath, and awareness to explore yoga's complete eight-limbed path—the ethics, practices, and meditation techniques that have supported wellbeing for over 5,000 years. Each session begins with a brief teaching to frame what you'll notice, followed by movement practice, then guided reflection to connect what you felt to what you're learning. This cycle of learn-move-reflect helps the philosophy land in your body, not just your head.

This is embodied philosophy, not lecture. You won't just learn about yoga's eight limbs—you'll feel what "non-violence" means when you stop pushing into a shape. You'll notice how "contentment" shifts when you accept where your body is today. You'll experience how breath and movement together create something neither can alone.

The six-week journey:

Over six weeks, you'll experience yoga as it was designed—not as just exercise, but as an integrated system where how you move, breathe, and pay attention all work together. Understanding the "why" behind practices can help you maintain them long after this program ends.

  • Week 1 | Foundations: Experience all eight limbs through movement—feeling each principle in your body, not just hearing about it.
  • Week 2 | Ethics (Yamas): Explore non-violence, truthfulness, and letting go. Discover how kindness to yourself sets the template for all other relationships.
  • Week 3 | Personal Practices (Niyamas): Build inner habits that support lasting change—clarity, contentment, discipline, self-study, and trust.
  • Week 4 | Physical Practice (Asana): Learn shapes as meditation in motion. Practice being present with discomfort without adding suffering. Begin turning attention inward.
  • Week 5 | Breath & Movement (Pranayama): Coordinate breath with movement to regulate your nervous system and build foundation for deeper practice.
  • Week 6 | Meditation & Integration: Bring it together—focused attention, meditation, and moments where it all clicks. Create your sustainable personal practice.

By week 6, you'll be able to:

  • Understand yoga's eight limbs as a practical, interconnected system—not just theory
  • Practice foundational shapes with safe alignment and personal modifications
  • Coordinate breath with movement to shift your nervous system state
  • Apply yogic principles (like non-violence and contentment) to daily challenges
  • Maintain a realistic home practice (starting at just 10 minutes) that fits your life

This program is for you if:

  • You're curious about yoga but want more than just physical exercise
  • You've tried yoga classes but never understood the philosophy behind it
  • You want to build a sustainable practice rooted in understanding, not just routine
  • You're looking for practical tools for stress, focus, and daily living
  • You've felt intimidated by yoga studios and want a welcoming, no-pressure environment

Good to know:

This is wellness education, not therapy or spiritual instruction. Every movement offers options—seated, standing, or modified. "Pass" is always welcome, and truly meant. No yoga experience or flexibility required. All bodies, all backgrounds. Small groups of 6-10 people keep the experience personal.
